We have this adventure client John,  who has joined us on a few adventures into the vast Makgadikgadi Pans of Botswana.

Whenever I see John at our Makgadikgadi Pans bivouac located not far from Gweta, he will be staring in a northern direction and he’ll ask me, without taking he’s gaze off the horizon, “Clinton, what lies North of here? What’s out there? Is it wilder than the pans?”

I will just say, “Yes John, it’s wild and very remote out there, and all Botswana maps end here in the pans. The area north of here is actually marked as “Here be Dragons” just like those old pirate maps, because no one has ever been north of here!”

This line usually satisfies our clients’ curiosity, but not John………. I got not one, but a few calls from John after our last adventure asking, no insisting, that we take him and his crew north.

I managed to keep him down and told him that there is no better place than the pans. For some reason our other regular client, Andrew Mad Man Katay, got wind of John’s requests and before I knew it I got phone call after phone call, sms after sms from Andrew “C’mon my Cuz take us there, you don’t want to hurt my or John’s feelings do you?”

The force is strong with these two, and I eventually gave in!

So here we go!

We are now venturing into some seriously uncharted territory.

There is this forgotten two spoor road in the far north of Botswana.

Back in the late 1800s it was known as the “Old Hunters Road” and as the name suggests, was used by hunters to trek and hunt through Botswana.

Today the road lies quietly on the border between Zimbabwe and Botswana.

The only traffic this road sees is the massive herds of elephant, sable, zebra and buffalo that cross the border on a regular basis.

And when night falls over this forgotten part of Botswana, the prides of lion that own this area will make use of the Old Hunters road as a comfortable track to hunt on.

BEFORE I START WITH THE “PLANNED SCHEDULE”, PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS AN ADVENURE UNLIKE NO OTHER KWA NOKENG HAS EVER OFFERED. WE ARE TRULY MOVING OUT OF OUR COMFORT ZONE HERE TO OFFER YOU AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE. PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • KWA NOKENG WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GUARANTEE WHERE WE WILL SLEEP EACH NIGHT. WE WILL STOP THE DAY’S ADVENTURE WHEN IT GETS DARK. FLY CAMPS WILL BE THE ORDER OF THE DAY
  • KWA NOKENG HAS A START AND END POINT IN MIND, THE REST WE WILL TAKE IS IT COMES
  • OUR CLIENTS HAVE EVERYTHING BUT TIME, THEREFORE  THIS SCHEDULE WILL BE HECTIC. YOU WILL STOP RIDING AS THE SUN SETS AND START AGAIN VERY EARLY EACH DAY
  • JOKES ASIDE, WE ARE GOING INTO BIG 5 TERRITORY. THE ONLY HUMAN INTERACTION THE WILDLIFE IN THIS AREA HAS ARE WITH HUNTERS, IT IS VERY VERY DANGEROUS
  • THE CAMPS ALONG THIS ROUTE WILL BE SET UP IN A LAAGER FORMAT TO KEEP THE LIONS AT BAY. IF YOU WANT TO PEE, YOU PEE IN A BOTTLE. YOU DON’T LEAVE YOUR TENT, OR ASK KATAY TO GO PEE FIRST!
  • TO MY KNOWLEDGE, NO ONE HAS EVER ATTEMPTED THIS ROUTE BY BIKE. I HAVE A FEELING IT’S DUE TO THE HIGH AND AGGRESSIVE PRESENCE OF THE BIG 5. ONCE AGAIN, BE WARNED KWA NOKENG WILL NOT BE HELD LIABLE FOR ANY LOSS OF LIFE OR LIMB……..OR BONEY!!

STILL WANT TO DO THIS?.......... ALRIGHTY THEN HERE WE GO!

Day 1
Friday 31st of May 2013: (Distance 750 tar, 150 dirt = 900km’s)
04h00:   Leave GP to arrive at Kwa Nokeng no later than 08h00, those of you that have time can drive up on Thursday the 30th. As explained earlier, this schedule is designed to save time and give you maximum exposure!
08h00: Breakfast at Kwa Nokeng
08h30: Leave for Lethlakane
12h00: Leave our vehicles at the Shell in Lethlakane. From here it’s only bikes and the support vehicles
18h00: Arrive at our bivouac close to Gweta

Day 2
Saturday the 1st of June 2013: (Distance 150 km’s dirt, 40 km’s tar)
08h00: Leave for Nata
13h00: Arrive at Nata, refuel and  probably have lunch at the Wimpy
14h00: Leave for Elephant Sands lodge, there is a 40kms tar section that seems unavoidable. I’m still sniffing around to see if we can find an off road section here.
15h00: Arrive at Elephant sands, camp for the night or move further up the road if we get there earlier in the day.

Day 3
Sunday the 2nd of June 2013: (Distance 150 kms dirt)
08h00: Start of the “Old Hunters road” adventure. You will note that we leave at 08h00 which is a bit late, bear in mind that we have to break the fly camp every morning which takes time!
09h00: This route will take us along the unmarked boundary between Botswana and Zimbabwe. I have no idea what this day will do to us, but we will try to get as close to the Pandamatenga area as possible
18h00: Stop riding when it gets dark.

Day 4
Monday the 3rd of June (100 kms dirt)
08h00: Leave camp and continue on the Hunters road until we hit the Chobe and Zambezi rivers
13h00: Arrive in Kasane – I’m thinking we should all stay in one of the hotels for a change. This will give Shumie and the team an opportunity to stock up on supplies and rearrange the equipment. (I will advise on this)
15h00: This is a must do, we will take a boat cruise on the Chobe river inside the Chobe National Park that is home to over 70 000 elephants
19h00: Dinner

Day 5
Tuesday the 4th of June 2013 (150 kms dirt)
06h00: We will be taken on a 2 hour game drive into the Chobe National park
08h30: Breakfast
10h00: Get out of town and trek back towards Nata via the same hunters road. Please note that this is the only road that allows us to ride our bikes inside the Chobe area.
18h00: Set up camp when it gets dark!
The further north you go, the bigger the Black Mambas become

Day 6
Wednesday the 5th of June 2013 (Distance 150 kms dirt and 40kms tar)
08h00: Leave for Nata via Elephant sands, refuel at Nata.
17h00: Set up camp at the same spot we did for Kingsley Holgate a while ago.

Day 7
Thursday the 6th of June 2013 (Distance 150 km’s dirt, 350km or 750km tar)
08h00: I have only done this route once before when we did the trip with Kingsley. It is the most unbelievable section of road I have ever done in Botswana - endless savannah on the right and the pans on the left.
We will join the road we came in with at Kubu again, making our way to Lethlakane, load the bikes and take the 350kms tar road to Kwa Nokeng.
It would be great if we could all spend the last night at Kwa Nokeng to do our usual prize-giving and maybe look at video footage of the trip before leaving for GP the next day.
For those on a tight schedule, they can shoot straight for GP on this day.

This trip includes:

  • All food and beverages
  • Level 7 medical back up courtesy of Outdoor Medical
  • All accommodation, we provide tents, showers etc

This trip excludes:

  • Your fuel
  • Border permit fees of around R200.00
  • Bring blow up mattress and sleeping bag - a very good one as it’s going to be very cold

The cost:

  • R16 000.00 and if we stay in a luxury hotel in Kasane around R18 000.00.
  • Shumie will advise on final costing early in January though

This trip will be ideal for something like a GS 800, KTM 690 - if you want to do it on a 990KTM or GS 1200, bring your A-Game. The terrain is unforgiving and the days are long and hard with no short cuts!

Andrew has asked me to open this trip up to Side by Side Rhino type vehicles and larger Quads which I will allow, please bear in mind that at Kwa Nokeng we respect the environment and will expect our clients to do the same, treading lightly as we go!
